What do magic mushrooms mean to mankind?
Called teonanactl, or "Food of the Gods", by the Aztecs, psychedelic mushrooms have enjoyed importance and esteem in human cultures for centuries. Prized by many ancient peoples, used in religious ritual for 3,000 years, psilocybin remains to this day not only a recreational hallucinogen of choice, but is, for many, a deeply spiritual tool for self-understanding.
How much should I take?
Start with low doses the first few times. The amounts vary per type, but some lower dosages to try at first are 2-3 grams (dried) of Stropharia cubensis, 1-2 grams (dried) of Ps. cyanescens, or about 3 grams (dried) of of Ps. baeocystis. Increase your dosages gradually until you find the right amount for you.
Can I grow mushrooms myself?
Many types of grow kit for magic mushrooms are available commercially. They are easy to use, but you have to be very careful to keep everything sterile, and to follow the directions accurately.
How should I prepare for the trip?
Make sure you're somewhere you feel comfortable. If you haven't taken mushrooms before, it's usually best to try them first somewhere non-pressure, like at home or a friend's house, and not in a bar or club, or walking around the streets. It can enhance the trip to use soft lighting and play relaxing music.
Can I combine mushrooms with alcohol or marijuana?
A small amount of alcohol won't hurt, but getting drunk while under the influence of mushrooms can make you feel nauseous and out of control. Marijuana is harmless in combination with mushrooms, but affects different people in different ways: some find that it prolongs the trip, others that it intensifies it, some get no effect whatever, and a few even report that it reduces the effect of the mushrooms. Be careful at first until you know how it affects you.
What if it's too much for me?
If you feel uncomfortably high, it can help to take in sugar, vitamin B3 (niacin), and/or vitamin C. If you don't have any vitamin tablets handy, make some lemonade or have some orange juice and a piece of candy. Orange soft drinks won't do--they don't have enough vitamin C and the caffeine could add an unpleasant buzzy feeling to the experience.
